Free career help in the US: where to start
How American Job Centers and CareerOneStop can help with job search and training at no cost, other free local routes, and how to prepare for a visit.
American Job Centers
American Job Centers are a nationwide network of local offices that help people search for jobs, find training and answer employment-related questions. Services vary by location, so contact your nearest centre to ask what it offers and whether you need an appointment.

Other free local routes
- College career centers, some of which support alumni as well as current students.
- Public libraries, many of which run job-search help and computer access.
- Community organizations and nonprofits offering job clubs or training programs.
Availability differs between areas, so check locally rather than assuming a service exists near you.
Questions to ask your local center
Useful first questions
- Which services do you offer, and do I need an appointment?
- Is there help with resumes, interviews or job search workshops?
- What training programs are available locally, and who is eligible?
- Is there extra support for my situation, for example after a layoff or a long break?
- Can I get help remotely, by phone or online?
Using the online tools well
Start with Explore Careers to compare a few occupations on their typical tasks, training and outlook, then use the job search to see how employers near you describe those roles. Note the skills and tools that come up repeatedly in adverts; those are what to evidence on your resume or to ask about training for. The online tools work alongside a center visit rather than replacing it.
Prepare for a visit
Bring or prepare
- A one-sentence description of what you need help with.
- A recent resume, if you have one.
- A list of jobs or fields you are considering.
- Any questions about training or eligibility for programs.
Common questions
Do American Job Centers charge for help?
Their core services are free. Some specific training programs have eligibility rules, so ask your local center what applies to you.
Can I use CareerOneStop without visiting a center?
Yes. Its career exploration, training and job search tools are available online.
