Social worker resume: registration, practice areas and complexity
How social workers can show registration or licensure, practice areas, statutory work and multi-agency practice on a resume while protecting confidentiality.
Registration and licensure
- England: registration with Social Work England.
- Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: registration with the Scottish Social Services Council, Social Care Wales or the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.
- United States: a state social work licence at your level; the Association of Social Work Boards explains licence categories, which differ by state.
- Newly qualified: your qualification, registration date and any assessed first year of practice programme you are completing.
Practice areas and statutory work
Describe each post by service and practice area, such as children's safeguarding, children in care, adults' long-term support, hospital discharge or mental health, and the statutory functions you carried out. Panels compare experience by the complexity and risk of the work, so caseload size alone is less useful than the kinds of decisions you made.
Illustrative example
Children's social worker
Before
Managed a caseload of children and families.
After
Held a caseload of children subject to child protection and child in need plans, chairing core groups, completing assessments to timescale and preparing evidence for court with the legal team.
Illustrative example
Adults' social worker
Before
Assessed adults' needs.
After
Completed care and support assessments and reviews for older adults and people with physical disabilities, including mental capacity assessments, and coordinated hospital discharge plans with health colleagues.
Evidence panels look for
| Area | Example evidence |
|---|---|
| Multi-agency practice | Working with police, health, schools or housing on shared plans |
| Court and panels | Statements written, attendance, legal planning meetings |
| Direct work | Tools and approaches used with children or adults |
| Supervision and reflection | Supervising students or newly qualified colleagues |
| Development | Training, practice educator roles, specialist interests |
Confidentiality check
- No names, ages, locations or unusual circumstances that could identify anyone.
- Numbers are general and rounded.
- Court matters are described by type of work, not by case.
- Any examples kept for interview are anonymised in advance.
Common questions
Do social work jobs use resumes or application forms?
Local authority roles in the UK commonly use application forms with a supporting statement; agencies and some US employers ask for a resume. Use the same anonymised evidence in both.
How do I describe my first-year practice as a newly qualified social worker?
List the settings, the types of assessment and plan you worked on, the supervision you received and the learning themes from your reflective logs.
