Sales resume: presenting targets, attainment and pipeline

How to present sales results on a resume: the right metric for each sales role, attainment against target, ranking and context, and handling a year you missed.

Rewritten sales bullets

Illustrative example

Account executive

Exceeded targets and closed big deals.

Achieved 112% of annual quota selling scheduling software to mid-sized healthcare providers, ranking second of nine account executives; average sales cycle about four months.

Illustrative example

Sales development representative

Made cold calls and booked meetings.

Booked an average of 14 qualified meetings a month from outbound calls and email to finance leaders, above the team target in nine of twelve months.

Illustrative example

Account manager

Looked after key accounts.

Managed 35 existing customer accounts, renewing all but two and growing the book through additional licences across three of the largest customers.

Context makes numbers believable

A percentage of target means little without the target's difficulty. Add the context a sales manager would ask about: new territory or inherited pipeline, product launch or established product, how many people were on the team and where you ranked. 'President's club' or similar awards are worth listing with the criterion behind them.

Handling a year you missed target

Most sales careers include a difficult period. You can leave a weak year's percentage off and describe activity, pipeline built or the reason the market changed, but do not misstate the figure. In interview, explain what happened, what you changed and how the following period went.

Activity and process evidence

  • Pipeline you generated, and how much of it converted.
  • How you kept customer relationship records accurate, and why that mattered for forecasting.
  • Playbooks, scripts or objection-handling notes you wrote that others used.
  • Products or markets you opened, or partnerships you set up.

Common questions

Should I put revenue figures from my current employer on a resume?

Percentages of target, rankings and deal counts usually make the point without disclosing confidential revenue. If you include revenue, round it and make sure it is not restricted information.

How far back should sales results go?

Show the last two or three years in detail. Older results can be summarised, unless a particular achievement is directly relevant to the new role.
