Resumes and cover letters
How to show promotions and several roles at one employer
Two layouts for showing progression within one employer on a resume, plus how to present secondments, acting-up roles and sideways moves clearly.
Why progression is worth showing
A promotion is evidence that someone who watched you work decided to give you more responsibility. If your resume shows only your latest title, that evidence disappears and a long stay can look static instead of steadily growing.
Layout one: one employer heading, stacked roles
Harwell Logistics · Leeds · 2019 – present Operations Team Leader · March 2023 – present • Lead a team of nine across two shifts; introduced a handover log that reduced missed collections. • Own the weekly carrier performance review with the regional manager. Operations Coordinator · June 2021 – March 2023 • Scheduled daily collections and handled delivery exceptions for key accounts. Warehouse Operative · August 2019 – June 2021 • Promoted after two years; trained new starters on the picking system.
This is the clearest layout for most people. The employer and overall dates appear once, and each role shows only what was new in it.
Layout two: separate entries
Use separate full entries when the roles were very different, in different locations or legal entities, or when the employer was renamed or taken over. Repeat the employer name in each entry so nobody thinks you changed jobs.
Secondments, acting roles and sideways moves
| Situation | How to label it |
|---|---|
| Temporarily covering a more senior role | Acting Team Manager (six-month cover), then return to your substantive title |
| Seconded to another team or organisation | Secondment: Project Analyst, Finance Transformation (2024) |
| Moved to a different function at the same level | List the new role with its own dates; no need to explain the move |
| Role renamed in a restructure | Use the new title with '(previously Clerk)' once |
Avoid repeating the same bullets
When roles overlap in content, the earlier role should mention only what was different or what led to the promotion. Repeating 'handled customer queries' under three titles wastes space and hides the growth you are trying to show.
Common questions
Should I say I was promoted?
The stacked layout shows it, but a short phrase such as 'promoted after two years' on the earlier role makes it explicit and is worth including.
How much detail should older roles at the same employer get?
Usually one or two bullets, focused on what earned the next step. The most recent role carries most of the detail.
