A one-page interview brief you can review in five minutes
A one-page layout for interview preparation: the role in a sentence, your three strongest examples, likely questions, your questions and the logistics.
Why one page
Pages of notes are useful while preparing but useless twenty minutes before an interview, when you only have time to refresh the essentials. A one-page brief forces you to choose what matters most, and that choosing is itself good preparation.
The template
1. The role in one sentence: [what the job is for] 2. Why I want it: [two honest reasons, specific to this employer] 3. My three strongest examples: [example 1: title and the requirement it proves] [example 2] [example 3] 4. Questions I expect and my first line for each: [question]: [opening sentence] 5. Questions I will ask them: [two or three] 6. Logistics: [time, format, link or address, names of interviewers, what to bring]
A filled-in example
Illustrative example
Brief for a facilities coordinator interview
- Role: keep three office sites safe, compliant and working for 400 staff.
- Why: I want broader site responsibility than my current single building, and they are mid-way through a move I could help deliver.
- Examples: contractor change-over with no downtime; fire-safety audit actions closed early; new booking system adopted by every team.
- Expected question: 'Tell me about a time a contractor let you down', first line: 'At my current site our cleaning contractor missed three nights in one month...'
- My questions: what does success look like after six months? How is the move being phased?
- Logistics: Thursday 10am, video, link in calendar, panel of two, have the audit summary to hand.
What to leave off
- Full scripted answers: you will sound read-out and lose your place.
- Everything you know about the company: keep only what connects to why you want the role.
- Examples you would not choose first: the page is for your strongest material.

Common questions
Can I look at the brief during a video interview?
Glancing at a few prompts is common, but reading from it is noticeable. Keep it to short reminders rather than sentences.
When should I fill it in?
The day before is ideal: close enough to be current, far enough to leave time for a practice run aloud.
