How does ATS scoring work?
There is no single ATS scoring formula. Employers configure different systems and may use filters, knockout questions, searches or manual review. A public ATS checker can estimate compatibility but cannot reproduce a private employer decision.

What can an employer configure in an ATS?
An employer may define required screening answers, stage rules, candidate tags, searches or ranking aids. The exact setup depends on the system, the vacancy and the recruitment team. Two companies using the same vendor can run very different processes.
A hard screening question may matter more than any CV keyword. For example, a statutory registration or right-to-work answer can be an actual eligibility boundary. Public advice should separate those conditions from preferences that can be supported through transferable evidence.
What does a public ATS compatibility score measure?
A compatibility tool can compare the supplied CV and job description. It can check whether important requirements are evidenced, whether relevant terms appear naturally, whether headings and dates are readable, and whether extraction produces coherent text.
The resulting number is a summary of those defined checks. Its value comes from the explanation behind it: which evidence is unclear, which term is missing, which section may parse badly and which apparent gap is actually a hard requirement.
Why can keyword match and suitability differ?
A person may have strong evidence in different language. An administrative manager who coordinated urgent cases may support prioritisation and decision-making requirements even if the vacancy uses the phrase 'operational triage'. Keyword coverage can improve by translating that genuine evidence accurately.
The reverse is also possible. Repeating 'project management' does not prove delivery. A strong score should reward supported evidence and penalise keyword stuffing rather than counting words alone.
What should you do with an ATS estimate?
Treat it as a revision map. Fix readable structure, surface strong evidence, use accurate role terminology and rerun the check. Do not contort the CV to chase one number or add claims that would fall apart in an interview.
The final application must still be reviewed against the employer's instructions. A clear PDF or Word export, correct screening answers and an honest explanation of relevant experience matter more than a cosmetic perfect score.
Common questions
Is 80 a good ATS score?
Only in the context of the checker's own method. Read the component reasons rather than treating a threshold as universal.
Can the employer see my Luceria score?
No. It is a preparation aid inside the user's workspace.
Does formatting affect ATS readability?
Yes. Complex layout can affect text extraction, although different systems handle files differently.
Should I copy the whole job description into my CV?
No. Use accurate terminology only where genuine evidence supports it.
